Here is an original story using common Grade 6 English vocabulary (around 180 words):
The Lost Kite
It was a sunny Saturday. Lily wanted to fly her new red kite in Blue Lake Park. She met her friend Tom there. The sky was clear and blue. "Look!" Lily shouted happily as the kite flew high. Tom clapped.
Suddenly, a strong wind blew! "Oh no!" Lily gasped. The string slipped from her hand. The kite danced wildly in the air, then landed far away, near some tall trees and bushes.
Lily felt sad. "My kite is lost!" Tom said, "Don't worry! Let's look!" They searched carefully. They looked behind trees and under benches. Lily felt hopeless. "Maybe it's gone forever," she sighed.
Just then, Tom pointed. "Look there!" Behind a thick bush, Lily saw a flash of red! "My kite!" she yelled with joy. Tom carefully pulled it out. It wasn't broken!
"Thank you, Tom!" Lily said gratefully. "You're a good friend!" Tom smiled. They decided to fly the kite together, holding the string tightly this time. They laughed as the red kite soared safely into the bright sky again. It was a perfect day after all.
